Donald Trump threatens to "renegotiate the USMCA soon" despite considering it effective.

The President of the United States ( US ), Donald Trump , threatened to “renegotiate very soon ” —if necessary— the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada ( T-MEC ), despite considering it “ effective ”, while warning that its non-compliance represents “a problem”.
During a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in the Oval Office on Tuesday, May 6 , Trump addressed the future of the trade agreement.
Why did Trump threaten to renegotiate the USMCA?He stated that, although the USMCA has been positive , it has not been respected, so he is considering a possible renegotiation with the governments of the countries involved.
“ It was very effective, and it still is, but people have to comply with it . That's been the problem, that they haven't respected it, and it's a temporary step. As you know, it ends soon . It will be renegotiated very soon .”
“I think it was a positive development since NAFTA; NAFTA was the worst trade deal. We'll see what happens; maybe we'll start renegotiating it if necessary, but it served its purpose, and the greatest achievement was getting rid of NAFTA. It was very unfair to the United States, and it never should have happened,” Trump said.
When will the first review of the USMCA take place? It's worth noting that the first formal review of the USMCA is scheduled for July 2026 , so it's likely that, if he remains in power, Trump will seek to renegotiate it with Mexico and Canada following his statements from the White House.
The USMCA was signed on November 30, 2018 , and subsequently, on July 1, 2020 , it came into force as the new reference framework for the trade relationship between Mexico, the United States and Canada, and as the platform to consolidate productive integration in North America.
